Ran the motor today off just the attraction pulse.
Roughly lined the commutator up by eye then didnt touch it again.

14V, 2.8A with no resistance pulling 1500rpms and climbing.
24V, 5A varistor by passed 3600rpms and climbing.

Ran it for 10 mins or so with no worries.
Not much vibration at all and one happy tinkerer.
Pitting in the commutator all across the leading edge was interesting at such low power.
Coils did not warm at all.

      Hi Deius,
Just wanted to know.. what are those Banks of High-Voltage Capacitors for????

Just to smooth out the DC.
I have the DC supply for 10-60V.
I have A variac and various other transformers for the higher voltages.

Mains power till I sort the system out then I will move over to batteries.

Dont look too much into the photos, there are no secrets im just scrapping stuff together to make things fit for the moment.

JB jokes in the book about vacuum advance on his mechanical commutators....
Well there may be some truth to that.
I advanced the timing ahead and green sparks started shooting from the commutator.
The machine also went up 1000rpm's.
The sparking seemed to be more evident when the coils where magnetically coupled together. (I placed an allen key across the back of the cores..).
This seems to defeat my theory i splitting the corner spins to see what happens for now.

Machine is looking good. Just wanted to mention that that green could just be from copper flaking of and burning though. Copper naturally burns green. You can look that up on google but I also know it to be true first hand from making the copper/magnesium cells.

                  Hi bob,

                  Yes it was copper burning.
                  A segment shorted out.
I machined the commutators to suit the shaft and some swarf got stuck in between.
I didnt pick it up untill I found the wrong segment had wear marks where it should not have had any.
Thats about enough playing around with one brush.

Machines top speed is about 5000rpms for the moment on mains power.
Im getting problems that wouldnt be evident running on pure DC.
The advance is about 20 degrees for max rpms.

Interesting to note that when power is disconnected sparks still jump across that commutator indicating plenty of power bouncing around.

                      Hi Deuis,

It would be very interesting to watch how the Sparks jump between the segments under a High-Speed video shooting..would impress to estimate the Energy over shoot!!

With 2 magnets proven to work I decided to add 2 more.
This has changed the magnetic field remarkably and give the energiser more torque.
                        Running no problems at 2000Rpms/133Hz.

                            Hi Deius,
I wonder how this set up is different from a standard DC Motor..??
other than the difference that you have a moving Magnet and stationary Coils!!
This is more relavent to the JB 1984 Machine than his 2000 SSG.. you can implement the SSG with it to make it a hybrid System of electrical recovery and the Boost Torque at the same time!! some thing like his ferris wheel model.
                            nice and laborious efforts though
                            appriciate your approach.

                                Not yet mate.

I ordered some new commutators, just waiting on them to get here.
Im also working on a new design for the brush holders, currently using vacuum motor brushes that are a bit narrow and dont use all the width of the commutator.

I wanted to get it running true and all adjustements done before I started hooking it up to batteries and harvesting spikes.
Its taken some time and effort to get it to this point but no point rushing it now.
