What is the proper way to connect the 7812 as seen in the image attached?

The way I had it, the part heated up so much the solder joints melted.Click image for larger version

In the intermediate manula Page 47, it says the 7812 needs to regulate voltage from the cpacitor to the control section. Is the control section the H11D1 or the MOSFETs? Also, is the grounding pin connecting to H11D1 pin5? When I did it that way, my circuit melted.

        Benjamin,

By control section in that particular paragraph on page 47 in the book is meant both the Optocoupler + the transistor as they control the opening of the Mosfet's Gate.
The ground of the regulator is connected to the negative of the cap. The output of the regulator supplies 12V to pin5 of the H11D1.

7812 Pin 1 (Input) - to positive of the capacitor and the Battery.
7812 Pin 2 (Ground) - to negative of the capacitor
        7812 Pin 3 (Output) - to pin 5 of H11D1

Thank you Lman. That makes a lot of sense.
